For some months Google has launched the new algorithm called Fred. The latest in a series of updates (Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, Mobilegeddon just to name a few) that have always had an important impact on the SEO strategies to be taken not to run into penalties.
New modifications to Google’s algorithm have arrived. The Internet giant has definitely put the spotlight on the most current results. If before looking for ‘ Olympics ‘ the first links that appeared could be on the history of the Olympic Games or on the last celebrated, Beijing 2008, now appears all the information about the next event: London 2012.
Google has changed its algorithm again. This time it is about giving priority to the most current content. The search engine will now offer its results taking into account the user’s preference for fresh information.
According to Google’s blog, this change of algorithm will affect 35% of searches, which gives an idea of the importance of these novelties. The concept that the company wants to convey with these modifications is the relevance of the current results.
The new Google algorithm will track the Web checking which topics are the most moving at any time, offering the most appropriate results in each case. This is possible thanks to the technology called Caffeine, which the search engine implanted more than a year ago.
If we take as an example the search ‘Olympics’ (in English, because for terms in other languages, as in Spanish, the search engine does not have optimized the change), we see that first appear the results for London 2012, being above the entire pages official.
Because Google has not yet optimized this option in all languages we can try to search in Google.es with the term ‘ Olympics ‘ (this time yes, in Castilian). Change is radical. In the first places appear two entries of Wikipedia, a result on the history of the Olympic Games and information on Beijing 2008. None of the links on the first page of the search engine is about London 2012.
What has changed
A few months later we can draw a balance of the main characteristics of this new algorithm and give some guidelines to promote behaviors, in terms of content, appreciated by Google. Let’s see some.
Check your site data
First thing to do: Use your Google Analytic account and check if in the last period your site has had a decline in sudden and rationally inexplicable visits. If you noticed after the month of March a sudden drop in visits is likely that the structure of your site and the content did not like Fred. Therefore you must intervene to remedy it.
Content in the center!
Fred’s goal is to make sure that the content offered is more and more useful to the user and that they give quality information. One of the cases of sites most affected by Fred were mainly blogs that focus little on their content and have within them an excessive part of advertising.
What does this mean? Remove all that is too invasive in the User experience. For example: Useless download buttons that block the reading, video adv that start when the user happens on the page, banners of subscription to the newsletter too persistent. In short, everything that disturbs a normal and pleasant navigation.

So with these little tricks it will be easier to survive Fred. Google makes updates to its algorithm almost every day, some changes, as in our case, have major impacts. Not afraid because Google does not want to penalize our sites but offers directives to make increasingly user-friendly navigation on our sites.
